For many years, Susan Stephens designed jewelry as an avocation to her 35-year career as a restaurateur and published author. She collected rocks and studied geology during college. Archeology studies gave her a deep appreciation of ancient jewelry, amulets and art. For the past ten years, she turned this love into a career, studying design and fabrication with senior jewelers as well as colored stone grading and identification and pearl grading at the Gemology Institute of America. Venezia Bella Jewelry was launched in 2003.
Always, she wondered at the history of jewels passing through her hands. Who mined the stone, cut the gem, wore the piece and treasured it before her? At first sight, Venice enchanted her. She spent days wandering the medieval streets, crossing swirling rios, mesmerized by the color and motion. Ancient ghosts called to her, and at night she dreamt she was a colorful mille fleur bead tumbling through time and motion. Here the inspiration for Venezia Bella Jewelry was born.
She wanted to capture the color, light and atmosphere of this magical place in her designs. Frequently she incorporated vintage gemstones and silver into her pieces, both for their intrinsic beauty and historical value. For centuries, these stones passed hand to hand—jade amulets that once graced an oriental mandarin’s gown, carved turquoise hidden in a Turkish sultan’s harem, Mediterranean coral from the bridal dowry of a Moroccan princess.
